Many young alumni know him for his tennis prowess. For eight years, Luigi Alvarado, B.S. 2009, was an integral member of the Catholic University tennis team. As senior, he held the second-best singles record in NCAA Division III. For five years after he graduated, he served as the assistant coach and, with the late Marty Dowd, B.A. 1960, led the team to a Landmark Conference Championship in 2014.
But his most important impact on society is with regenerative medicine and genomics. In addition to making profound advances in hematopoietic stem cell biology, Dr. Alvarado has played a key role in bolstering the Peruvian scientific community. In 2016, he chaired the organizing committee of the first conference of Peruvian scientists in the U.S. He went on to help establish the Peruvian Association for Science, Innovation, and Technology in the U.S., a soon-to-be non-profit organization recognized by the Peruvian government.
Since 2018, Dr. Luigi Alvarado has been a research scientist for 10x Genomics, a leading company in genomics and single-cell biology.
On Friday, April 12, 2019, we presented Dr. Alvarado with a Young Alumni Merit Award. Please join us in congratulating Dr. Alvarado for his incredible work as a young alumnus of The Catholic University of America. Thank you, Dr. Alvarado, for playing such an important role in improving the lives of others.
The Catholic University of America is only a small piece of this incredible story, but we are proud to be a University that has a tremendous impact through the accomplishments of our alumni. We ask you to consider making a gift today so that we can continue to educate Cardinals who will go on to make a positive impact on our world.
