Cardinal teams have a proud history of punching well above their weight class in both men’s and women’s sports. Our student-athletes are motivated to cultivate their God-given talents with discipline and heart, guided by committed coaches, and encouraged by the cheers of their classmates and the support of enthusiastic alumni. We’ve won the Landmark Conference Presidents’ Trophy as the strongest overall athletic department in the league twice since 2012 — and on average over the past decade, our teams have ranked among the top third of NCAA Division III programs nationwide.

That’s a record to build on. High-quality sports programs are not only key assets in attracting desirable varsity prospects, but such programs are also powerful drivers of both enrollment and retention across the undergraduate population.

Fully 35 percent of Catholic University’s 2018 freshman cohort were recruited student-athletes. Over the past five years, athletes retain on average five percentage points higher than non-athletes. Current research demonstrates that students who regularly use campus athletic facilities, as well as those who participate in intramural or intercollegiate competition, feel a deeper connection to their university community. Improving the athletics facilities for our varsity sports also benefits general campus recreation, which spurs deeper engagement and ultimately, retention.
