Anna Mae V. McCabe Hays, M.S.N. 1968, Nurse and Brigadier General

Anna Mae V. McCabe Hays, M.S.N. 1968, Nurse and Brigadier General

Anna Mae V. McCabe Hays (1920–2018) made history as the first woman to achieve the rank of brigadier general (May 1970) in the U.S. military, a milestone that cemented her legacy as a trailblazer in both nursing and military leadership. A dedicated Army nurse, she served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, demonstrating exceptional skill and leadership in critical medical operations.

Hays furthered her expertise in nursing and healthcare administration by earning her Master of Science in Nursing (M.S.N.) from The Catholic University of America in 1968. Her studies at Catholic University equipped her with advanced clinical and administrative knowledge, helping to shape her visionary leadership within the United States Army Nurse Corps.

During her tenure, she modernized military nursing practices, advocated for better working conditions for Army nurses, and played a pivotal role in the expansion of opportunities for women in the military. Her distinguished career earned her numerous accolades, including the Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Service Medal.

Though she passed away in 2018, her influence endures, inspiring generations of military nurses and women pursuing leadership roles in the armed forces.

Marguerite Williams, Ph.D. 1942, Geologist

Marguerite Williams, Ph.D. 1942, Geologist

Marguerite Thomas Williams (1895–1991) shattered barriers as the first African American to earn a Ph.D. in geology in the United States, a distinction she achieved in 1942 at The Catholic University of America. Her groundbreaking dissertation, A Study of the Natural Drainage of the Anacostia Drainage Basin, explored the effects of erosion and human activity on the environment, foreshadowing today’s conversations about environmental justice and land conservation.

In an era when few Black scholars—especially women—had access to advanced scientific education, Williams’ achievement was nothing short of extraordinary. Her time at The Catholic University of America was pivotal, equipping her with the expertise and credentials to break through racial and gender barriers in geology and academia.

Williams’ journey began with a B.A. from Howard University in 1923, followed by a master’s degree in geology from Columbia University in 1930. After earning her doctorate, she was promoted to full professor at the University of the District of Columbia, where she mentored future scientists. She later taught night classes at Howard University, further shaping young minds. Williams retired in 1955, leaving a powerful legacy as a pioneering geologist, educator, and trailblazer in STEM.
