More than 60 donors helped fund the $1.5 million renovation, providing Catholic University Football with its first dedicated locker room.

The Catholic University of America celebrated the opening of the Brigadier General Sean Mulholland Football Locker Room on October 15. The event brought together football alumni, donors, family members, military colleagues, coaches, student-athletes, and other honored guests to mark a milestone for the University’s football program and pay tribute to the legacy of a distinguished alumnus.

Named in honor of Brigadier General Sean Patrick Mulholland, B.A. 1982, a former Catholic University football captain and decorated U.S. Army officer, the renovated facility provides the Cardinals with their first locker room dedicated exclusively to the football team. The space is designed to strengthen team camaraderie, support player development and performance analysis, and enhance the University’s ability to recruit outstanding student-athletes and coaches.

A special memorial wall at the locker room entrance pays tribute to Sean Mulholland and his cousin, Tom Mulholland, B.A. 1992, another valued member of the Catholic University Football family.

Tom Mulholland played for the Cardinals before returning to the University as the team’s defensive coordinator from 1993 to 2002 and head coach from 2002 to 2003. He died in 2022 and is survived by his wife, Dr. Niveen Mulholland, and their children, Tara, Jimmy and Megan.

The evening celebrated not only the opening of a new facility but also the enduring values of service, leadership, friendship, and commitment embodied by Mulholland.

“The Brigadier General Sean Mulholland Football Locker Room represents all that we are in Catholic Athletics — our commitment to our mission, our community and excellence,” said Kevin Robinson, vice president for Athletics and Recreation at The Catholic University of America. “The Mulholland Locker Room is a major step toward our vision of becoming the elite athletic department in Division III. There are very few football locker rooms across the division that come anywhere close to it.”

Robinson also referenced a phrase shared by keynote speaker Vincent “Vinny” Sica, B.M.E. 1983, that captured Mulholland’s approach to leadership: “Mission First, People Always.”

“That is what the locker room represents,” Robinson said.

A Modern Facility for Catholic Football

The renovated Brigadier General Sean Mulholland Football Locker Room, conceptualized by HKS Architects & Designers and supervised by vice president and senior project manager, Kevin Nowak, B.S. 2001, M.Arch. 2003, features spacious individual lockers and dedicated equipment storage for every team member, a new shower room, updated flooring, and multiple television monitors to facilitate the review of practice plans and performance analysis.

The facility also includes a gathering space large enough to accommodate the entire team, Cardinal and football-themed wall graphics, and amenities designed to support the program throughout the year. Reserved exclusively for the football team, the locker room provides a dedicated environment for preparation, collaboration, and team building.

Beyond its physical improvements, the facility represents a significant investment in the future of Catholic University football, creating a space that reflects the program’s proud history and its aspirations for continued growth.

Honoring a Life of Service

Mulholland graduated from Catholic University in 1982 after serving as captain of the football team. Following graduation, he entered the U.S. Army Officer Candidate School intending to become a doctor, but ultimately chose a career in military service in the field.

He went on to serve around the world in the Army Special Forces, rising to the rank of brigadier general. His military honors included the Bronze Star, and he was inducted into the Officer Candidate School Hall of Fame.

Throughout his career, Mulholland was deeply committed to the soldiers under his command, particularly wounded warriors, helping ensure they found continued purpose and meaning in service. He died in 2018, leaving behind a legacy of courage, integrity and devotion to others.

Lieutenant General Bill Burleson (Ret.), U.S. Army, who served under Mulholland in Afghanistan, attended the opening ceremony. Burleson retired in June 2024 after 36 years of military service.

“It is great to see so many people — friends, family, classmates, and those who served with Sean — come together to honor his memory in a place so fitting: the Sean Mulholland Football Locker Room,” Burleson said. “It will give generations of young men the opportunity to remember Sean, reflect on his values and integrity, and be inspired by his example.”

Burleson described Mulholland as a man whose character and bravery defined him.

“How do you speak in such a short time about someone who was, for lack of a better word, a good guy? I think a good guy is defined by strength of character, integrity, and, in Sean’s case, bravery,” he said. “It is wonderful that we can preserve his legacy as a testament to those qualities and as an inspiration to others.”

Friends, Alumni, and Supporters Bring the Vision to Life

Following Sean Mulholland’s death, former teammates, family members, friends, and fellow alumni — including some who had no personal connection to him — came together to support the $1.5 million locker room renovation. More than 60 donors contributed to making the project a reality, demonstrating the strength of the Catholic University community and its commitment to the football program’s future.

Among those who spearheaded this locker room project include Vinny and Ellen Sica, along with Scott Amey, B.A. 1969, and his wife, Deborah Amey.
Sica was Mulholland’s football teammate, college roommate, and lifelong friend. A 1983 graduate who earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Sica played four seasons on the offensive line and served as team captain during his senior year. It was during their time as teammates that the two developed the close friendship that would endure throughout their lives.

“If you never knew Sean, he was, pound for pound, one of the strongest guys I have ever known and had one of the biggest hearts I have ever known,” Sica said during the ceremony. “He was not a tall man in stature, but I have never met a bigger man.”

Addressing the Catholic University football players gathered for the event, Sica encouraged them to respect the new facility and honor the legacy behind its name.

Scott and Deborah Amey also made a significant contribution, providing a $100,000 matching gift despite having no personal connection to the Mulholland family. A former Catholic University football player, Scott Amey made the gift to give back to his alma mater and help strengthen the program’s recruiting efforts.

Additional support came from Sean Mulholland’s teammates and classmates, as well as classmates of his siblings, reflecting the broad network of relationships and generations of Cardinal pride behind the project.

Other generous lead benefactors include Bobby D’Ambrosia, B.A. 1984, and Stephanie D’Ambrosia; John Carvelli, B.A. 1984, and Kathryn Carvelli; Richard Change, B.S.E. 2000; Lucy Lee, P'27, and Josh Mun, B.S.B.A. 2027; and Andrew Reger, B.A. 1999, and Brooke Reger, B.A. 2001.

Together, these contributions transformed the vision for a dedicated football locker room into a lasting investment in Catholic University athletics.

Investing in the Next Generation of Cardinals

Building on former head football coach and alumnus Mike Gutelius’ tradition of instilling Cardinal pride, Kory David, head coach, emphasized the facility’s significance for current players, alumni and prospective student-athletes.

“The Brigadier General Sean Mulholland Football Locker Room will be a source of pride and connection for our team and our alumni,” David said. “It will be a daily reminder to our players that they are part of something bigger than themselves. For recruits, it will demonstrate the strength of the Catholic Football family and our commitment to investing in their experience and future.”

The University invites additional supporters to become part of the project’s legacy by sponsoring an individual locker with a gift of $5,000 or more. Each sponsored locker will feature a custom plaque recognizing the donor’s generosity and reminding student-athletes of the community supporting them as they compete, grow and represent Catholic University.
