The Caldwell Chapel Story

In 1888, the year following the University’s founding, Mary Elizabeth Caldwell made a donation to fund the construction of St. Paul’s Chapel in Caldwell Hall. She was later married there.

Within two years of this gift, the altars, windows, and organ were installed. The New York Tribune, in its April 19, 1890 edition, called the chapel “the most beautiful chapel in the United States and one of the finest in the world.”

The 13 marble altars (one main and twelve side) were made in France. The main altar features:  an alto-relievo of the Last Supper on a gold background; a carved marble tabernacle; a marble crucifix with bronze statue of Christ; and two additional alto-relievo sculptures at the base. The 12 side altars line the nave, each set on a raised platform in a niche with a barrel vaulted ceiling. Each side altar is dedicated to one of the great saints.

The 17 stained glass windows were made by the Royal Bavarian Art Institute in Munich, Germany. The original handwritten contract with the Institute indicates that the windows were “to show in every line boldness of design and beauty and majesty of feature and form . . . . The figures in the groups must be as large and majestic as the place will allow.”

The JH and CS Odell & Co. pipe organ was built in New York City. Most of its components are still original.

The 80-foot long Chapel is entered from a grand oak and marble staircase. Its notable architectural details include:  arched double doors, marble statuary, oak doors and columns carved with floral details, and ornamental plaster and stucco. The stations of the cross were crafted by renowned American artist, Allan Rohan Crite, in the mid-twentieth century.

After nearly a century and a half of continuous use, Caldwell Chapel requires thoughtful and thorough restoration to preserve its spiritual, historical, and architectural significance and beauty. We will celebrate and honor Archbishop Fulton Sheen by completing this restoration.
