From live jams in the Rathskeller to card games in “The Nest”, whether you know it as the Black Organization of Students at The Catholic University of America (BOSA-CUA) or the Black Student Alliance (BSA), Black student life at Catholic University has always been rich with laughter, resilience, leadership, and legacy.

We caught up with two student leaders—one from the past and one shaping the present—to share favorite memories and hopes for the future.

Christen Harrell is a senior majoring in psychology and brain sciences at The Catholic University of America and serves as the 2025–2026 president of BSA. Passionate about understanding human behavior and promoting mental well-being, she aspires to a career in industrial/organizational psychology. Through her leadership in BSA and her work as social media chair for the Center for Cultural Engagement, Christen champions cultural awareness, celebrates diversity, and creates spaces where every voice is seen and heard.

Dometrice J. “Demo” or “DJ” Sellers is the founder and inaugural president of (BOSA-CUA). A proud 1974 graduate with a Bachelor of Science in aero-mechanical engineering, he built a distinguished 30-year career in systems engineering and program management with the U.S. Navy and Department of Defense. Today, he leads DJSellers LLC in California and continues to mentor young professionals, champion community empowerment, and celebrate the legacy of Black excellence at Catholic University.

Where We Hung Out

Then (1967–1972):

“We gathered in the Cardinal Hall Social Center—better known as The Rathskeller—and later in our BOSA-CUA office space. Off campus, Fred’s Inn in Brookland was our go-to, and we often visited the Howard University Quadrangle and American University Women’s Dorm,” — Dometrice “Demo” Sellers, Founder and Inaugural President, BOSA-CUA

Now (2025):

“We hang out in The Nest, specifically the Center for Cultural Engagement. It is small but cozy—perfect for talking, playing cards, and watching movies. Off campus, we loved Murray and Paul’s diner—great food, better prices!” — Christen Harrell, President, BSA

Most Memorable Moments

Then (1967–1972):

“We co-sponsored an event with Delta Sigma Theta called 'Demo & The Foxes Nine Present a Jam at the Cardinal Center.' It was a blast and helped raise funds!”

Now (2025):

“At our 2022 Black and White Tie Affair, the night ended with 200 of us singing 'Love' by Keyshia Cole. The whole room swayed together—it was pure joy.”

The Language and the Vibe

Then (1967–1972):

“‘I’m Black and I’m Proud.’ That phrase captured everything—our identity, our purpose, and our pride.”

Now (2025):

“We say 'crash out' when something’s wild or when we’re about to lose it. Like, 'I’m gonna crash out!' It makes us laugh and keeps things real—even when leadership gets stressful.”

Looking Ahead: 50 Years of Legacy and Leadership

Demo’s Vision for the Future:

  1. Teach Black History: Tell our stories—especially post–WWII to now.
  2. Get Political: Every student should be registered and ready to vote.
  3. Be Financially Savvy: Learn the U.S. financial system, from real estate to stocks.

Christen’s Advice for Today:

“BSA should keep building its bond with Black alumni. They represent where we’ve been—and who we can become.”
