On April 5, Martin R. Kalfatovic, associate director for digital initiatives and scholarly communications and program director of the Biodiversity Heritage Library at Smithsonian Libraries and Archives, joined the School of Library and Information Science for the 33rd annual Elizabeth W. Stone Lecture. His presentation, “Finding the Nature of Illumination in Libraries and Museums: Cultural Heritage and the Technology of Culture,” explored how libraries, archives, galleries, and museums must reconcile historic missions, new audience expectations, and the seemingly relentless deluge of technological innovation in order to view them not as existential threats, but as opportunities to evolve our “memory institutions” for survival in ages to come.
Established in 1990, the Elizabeth W. Stone Lecture Series honors Dr. Elizabeth W. Stone, Dean Emerita of the School of Library and Information Science, for her service to the school and the library profession.
